WHO Declares Ebola Bundibugyo Outbreak a Public Health Emergency in DRC and Uganda

The World Health Organization (WHO) has determined that the Ebola Bundibugyo virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda qualifies as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). However, it does not fulfill the criteria for a global pandemic emergency.

In response to this classification, the WHO Director-General has issued a series of temporary recommendations. These directives are informed by the International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee’s guidance, which aligns with the Director-General’s assessment of the situation.

• Strengthening health surveillance at borders to prevent further spread of the virus.
• Enhancing public health education to inform communities about preventive measures.
