Director and comedian Judd Apatow took a jab at Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise at the 74th annual Directors Guild of America Awards, criticizing his reluctance to use computer-generated imagery (CGI) effects in his films.

Apatow, known for his irreverent humour and satirical critiques of the entertainment industry, says, “Remember when Tom Cruise jumped up and down on the couch and we all thought, ‘What a lunatic! And now he rides a motorcycle off a cliff and BASE jumps and we’re all like, ‘Tom’s fine’!” He continued and added, “Tom is not fine. Someone needs to explain to him something called CGI. You’re 60. Calm down,”

Cruise, known for his dedication to performing his own stunts, has long been renowned for his daring physical feats on screen. However, some have criticized his reliance on practical effects, arguing that they put him at risk of injury and limit the creative possibilities of his films.

Apatow’s comments, though humorous, reflect a growing trend in the film industry toward the use of CGI effects in movies. As technology continues to advance, many filmmakers are finding new ways to incorporate CGI into their projects, allowing them to achieve effects that would have been impossible to create with practical means alone.
