Kate Winslet reflects on how she handled the frequent criticism of her weight after Titanic became a success in the late ’90s in a recent interview with The Guardian. Kate Winslet is talking up about being in the spotlight and the constant pressure she has to deal with to appear a specific way as her daughter’s acting career gains more notoriety.

While talking about it, Kate told The Guardian, “People are subject to scrutiny that is more than a young, vulnerable person can cope with. But in the film industry, it is really changing. When I was younger my agent would get calls saying, ‘How’s her weight?’ I kid you not.” She also added, “It was almost laughable how shocking, how critical, how straight-up cruel tabloid journalists were to me,” she tells the outlet. “I was still figuring out who the hell I bloody well was! They would comment on my size, they”d estimate what I weighed, and they’d print the supposed diet I was on. It was critical and horrible and so upsetting to read.”

She remembered one of the most shocking comments which said, “If she just lost five pounds, Leo would’ve been able to fit on the raft.”

Despite her terrible experience of being a celebrity at a young age, Winslet observes that watching the industry and media growth is promising. Winslet is one of many female actors who have spoken out against Hollywood this year owing to the demands put on women to be a certain size on television.
